25th DIRECTOR´S WEEK BRINGS 13 NEW FILMS AND BETWEEN THEM FOUR EUROPEAN AND WORLD OPENINGS

Most modern problems are present in the Official Section Directors Week /Manoel de Oliveira Award of the 35th Fantasporto. The films selected for this part of the program approach the classical thrillers, showcasing rejection and anxiety , with varied subjects such as urban violence, children’s exploitation, the drama of clandestine sea  travellers, the defense of the honour, the drama of the emigrants ou contoversial  science experiments.  This Official Section has 13 features, all in national premieres, with 2  World premieres and two European premieres.  It is also the first time that the festival opens with a oriental film, “Haemoo”, South Korean entry for the Oscars.

In fact, in this section, Fantasporto will present 4 World Premieres, 5 European Premieres and many films which will only be released internationally in 2015.

The Portuguese personality to receive a Tribute in the festival is producer and director Fernando Vendrell. 

Also Film Schools and universities are screening their latest productions and are going to have their annual meeting in Fantasporto . An art exhibition by renowned painter Manuela Mendes da Silva complete the program of Fantasporto 2015.

The festival takes place at the Municipal Theatre Rivoli with the Official Opening on the 27th February, and till the 7th March. 

Oporto, capital of the North of Portugal, over the Douro River and “Best European Destination” 2013 and 2014, welcomes the 35th edition of Fantasporto, Oporto International Film Festival., one of the most prestigious festivals in the world.

More than 10 days dedicated to celebrate the film industry and where producers, directors , actors, other film professionals and a great number of film fans are welcomed to a program with all genres, with shorts and features, but with a strong accent on fantasy and thrillers.

The most recent films, many in European and World Premieres, are present in 4 competitive sections – Fantasy, Directors Week, Orient Express and Portuguese Cinema . The productions of 26 countries have been selected out of the 51 countries that sent films for selection. All in all, about 200 films to be screened, also in retrospectives and tributes.

Included in the section “Fantas Classics” , Fantasporto is going to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Orson Welles and the 80th anniversary of the release of “Top Hat”, which come with a dozen of features remembering top film figures such as Fred Astaire and Ginger Rodgers – so Dance had to be the year’s theme. Lectures, Q&A’s, book presentations and workshop enrich the program.

The Opening feature is “Hae Moo”, Korean’s entry for the Oscars.

A high-seas adventure with substance and heart, Haemoo is exactly why Hollywood is beating a path to South Korea's door. This gripping drama offers the tense, steady build of a film like Jaws — although in this case the threat is human.

Kang (The Chaser's Kim Yoon-seok) is captain of a fishing boat crewed by rough men who are used to the harsh realities of life at sea. Their regular fishing runs net them only a meagre income for their families back home, so when a more lucrative opportunity comes up, Kang grabs it. The job: smuggle a group of ethnic Koreans leaving China for new lives in South Korea. It's risky — and illegal — but offers the prospect of bricks of cash. Desperate migrants or dead fish: Kang doesn't care what he brings back to port if it means money.

His crew is a more complex mix of individuals, including Dong-sik (actor and K-pop star Park Yu-chun), an inexperienced young sailor. He strikes up a romance with a migrant named Hong-mae (Han Ye-ri), giving her a "first class" hiding spot in the engine room while the others are left in more dangerous circumstances.

Haemoo is based on actual events, which gives a sharp dimension to its story of crew members scheming, battling, and ready to exploit their human cargo.

Director Shim Sung-bo makes an impressive debut here, but his storytelling skill shouldn't be a surprise: he wrote the screenplay for director Bong Joon-ho's award-winning Korean noir Memories of Murder. Bong, fresh from the success of Snowpiercer, has returned the favour by co-writing and producing Haemoo with Shim. The result is a powerfully emotional drama with tension that tightens like a winch.

The British contingent stands out among the European films in competition at an edition that will also pay tribute to Portuguese director and producer Fernando Vendrell

A total of 27 feature films and 19 shorts make up the official selection of Fantasporto, according to the announcement made by the organisers of the event, which will be celebrating its 35th edition between 27 February and 7 March this year. The Korean movie HaeMoo by Shim Sung-Bo and the Canadian title Patch Town by Craig Goodwill will have the respective honours of opening and closing the festival directed by Mário Dorminski.

The selection, which was pared down from a multitude of works hailing from 51 countries, includes four world and five European premieres. Fourteen of the 27 features were produced by European countries, with the British contingent enjoying a major presence, as it has six titles in the selection: Awaiting by Mark Murphy and The Hoarder by Matt Win, both of which are world premieres, as well as Let Us Prey by Brian O’Malley, Hungerford by Drew Casson, Deadly Virtues by Ate de Jong, and The Dead 2: India by Howard J Ford and Jonathan Ford.

A place in the competition has also been granted to the Italian films The Perfect Husband by Lucas Pavetto and Handy by Vincenzo Cosentino (European premiere), the Romanian title Be My Cat: A Film for Anne by Adrian Tofei, the German-Russian co-production III by Pavel Khvaleev (both of the latter are world premieres), the Spanish movie Asmodexia by Marc Carreté, Hungary's Liza, the Fox Fairy by Karoly Meszaros, the French film Horsehead by Romain Basset and the Irish movie The Canal by Ivan Kavanagh.

The remaining 13 features in the official selection are mainly US productions, but some room has also been left for Asian cinema, with four European premieres: the Japanese titles Hunger of the Dead by Naoto Tsukiashi and Ao Oni by Daisuke Kobayashi, the Korean film Mourning Grave by In-Chun Oh, and the Filipino movie Dementia by Perci M Intalan.

Thirteen works will be presented at the Directors' Week, including One on One, which sees the return of Kim Ki Duk to Fantasporto two years after his film Pietà won an award at the gathering.

Young Portuguese cinema also has a place reserved for it at the festival, thanks to the short films that will be presented as part of the competition dedicated to film schools. Just one national feature film stands out in addition to all the shorts: A Porta 21, a film noir shot in black and white, produced by Fury n’ Dust and directed by João Marco (Além de Ti, 2013).

Todas as preocupações modernas estão espelhadas na Secção Oficial Semana dos Realizadores/ Prémio Manoel de Oliveira do 35º Fantasporto 2015.  Os filmes seleccionados vão desde os thrillers clássicos  a filmes de ansiedade e rejeição (White Settlers,) , violência urbana ( One on One), passando pela exploração infantil,  (Children’s Show), ao drama dos clandestinos que afrontam o mar  (Hae Moo) até  ao drama da adopção (Keeping Rosy)  à defesa da honra (Memories on Stone), ao desejo do regresso a casa (El Rayo) e às experiencias científicas de ponta (Closer To God).  Integram esta secção 13 filmes  inéditos em Portugal dos quais 2 são em Antestreia Mundial e 2 em Antestreia Europeia. O Fantasporto orgulha-se ainda de apresentar nesta secção o filme candidato às nomeações dos Óscares pela Coreia do Sul,  ”Haemoo”, filme que será apresentado na noite de abertura do Festival. Será assim a primeira vez que um filme oriental abre o Fantasporto. 

Most modern problems are present in the Official Section Directors Week /Manoel de Oliveira Award of the 35th Fantasporto. The films selected for this part of the program approach the classical thrillers, showcasing rejection and anxiety , with varied subjects such as urban violence, children’s exploitation, the drama of clandestine sea  travellers, the defense of the honour, the drama of the emigrants ou contoversial  science experiments.  This Official Section has 13 features ,all in national premieres, with 1 World premiere and two European premieres.  It is also the first time that the festival opens with a oriental film, “Haemoo”, South Korean entry for the Oscars.

Estes filmes  muito recentes e inéditos em Portugal vieram de 8 países, sendo 6 em Antestreia Mundial e 2 em  Antestreia Europeia, trazendo o Fantasporto mais uma vez, para a vanguarda dos eventos cinematográficos.  A produção canadiana “Patch Town” de Craig Goodwill será o filme de encerramento do festival.

PRÉMIO CINEMA PORTUGUÊS - MELHOR FILME

ANTESTREIAS MUNDIAIS

Como sempre, o cinema português está representado, desta vez, com 59 filmes . A retrospectiva  dedicada a uma personalidade do cinema português  será dedicada a Fernando Vendrell, realizador e produtor. Também o Prémio de Cinema Português - Melhor Filme e Melhor Escola de Cinema se vai realizar , com uma selecção de 16 filmes inéditos a concorrerem  pelo prémio. No sector dedicado à competição de Escolas de Cinema estarão em jogo as produções da Universidade do Minho, Universidade Católica, Restart, Universidade Lusófona , ETIC e Escola Soares dos Reis.

Decorrerá ainda durante o festival o 2º Encontro de Escolas de cinema, assim como se vai proceder à  abertura de um Programa Formativo que incluiu workshops e , pela primeira vez, uma bolsa de guiões, a dar oportunidade aos nossos escritores e guionistas de contactarem com os profissionais do cinema presentes no Fantasporto.

As usual,  Portuguese cinema is present with 59 films. The national personality to pay tribute is Fernando Vendrell, director and producer. A great number of film Schools and universities is  running for the prize for the best school and  16  films run for the Best Portuguese Film award.  In the context f the festival, the 2nd  Meeting of Film Schools  and a Bank of Scripts (new) willl bring writers  in contact with the  film professionals at the festival.

Fred Astaire, Ginger Rodgers  celebram  os 80 anos de “Top Hat” com uma retrospectiva dos seus inesquecíveis filmes, incluindo “The Gay Divorcee”, “Swing Time”, “Shall we Dance”, Follow the Fleet”, “Flying Down to Rio”, “Carefree”, “The Story of Vernon and Irene Castle”.

Também se celebram os 100 anos de Orson Welles do “Citizen Kane” e outros  filmes do realizador.  Estas homenagens  fazem parte da recuperação  e dignificação de filmes icónicos  da História do Cinema, na  nova secção inciada em 2014, “Fantas Classics”.

Fred Astaire and Ginger Rodgers will dance away in a special Tribute to the 75th anniversary of “Top Hat”  with the screening of that film and also  “The Gay Divorcee”, “Swing Time”, “Shall we Dance”, Follow the Fleet”, “Flying Down to Rio”, “Carefree”, “The Story of Vernon and Irene Castle”.

.Fantasporto also celebrates the 100th anniversary of the bbirth of director Orson Welles, screening “ Citizen Kane” and 2 more of his films. These tributes are part of the program “Fantas Classics”,  created in 2014, aiming at recuperating and dignify old classics.

Catalan Films & TV is the international audiovisual engine of Catalonia, creating links nationally and internationally and promoting the presence of Catalonia and its productions at markets and festivals. Since 2008, Catalan Films & TV publishes its selection of short films for international promotion, ShortCat. PROGRAMA EDUCATIVO E FORMATIVO DO FANTASPORTO 2015

4º PRÉMIOS CINEMA PORTUGUÊS 2015

O Prémio de Cinema Português foi instituído em 2012, sendo a 4ª em 2015.  Tem como objectivo principal a melhoria da produção portuguesa e a acessibilidade dos jovens estudantes de cinema e cineastas ao mundo profissional que o festival proporciona. Tem como modalidades o Prémio para Melhor Filme  Português (só para  filmes inéditos  – após selecção) e o Prémio para a Melhor Escola de Cinema ( com o melhor lote de filmes inéditos e não-inéditos).

O Prémio Melhor Escola de Cinema tem contado com um número crescente de participações e foi ganho pela Universidade Católica (2012), pela Restart (2013), pela Universidade Católica (2014). Também vencedores foram os seguintes filmes

This competition for Portuguese Films only, has two main sections, one dedicated to new films in premiere and the other to chose the best film course of the year.

2º ENCONTRO NACIONAL DE ESCOLAS E CURSOS DE CINEMA

Dia 5 de Março | Piso 3 | Rivoli | 11h

Numa tentativa de congregar esforços para debater e resolver os principais problemas comuns às escolas e cursos de cinema em Portugal, este 2º Encontro conta com a presença de representantes das entidades participantes no Prémio de Cinema Português , e tem como coordenador o Prof Dr Martin Dale da Universidade do Minho e correspondente em Portugal da revista “Variety”.

Os responsáveis dos cursos, professores e alunos, num debate que aborda aspectos pedagógicos, de financiamento e evolução das novas tecnologia, entre outros, e que traça medidas concretas sobre o sector e o futuro do Cinema em Portugal.

Esta actividade cruza ainda com a 1ª Bolsa de Guiões, com o Prémio de Cinema Português- Melhor Escola de Cinema  e com  as palestras e conversas com os convidados do festival.

O Fantasporto tem o prazer de apresentar, integrado no seu Programa Educativo e Formativo – FANTAS FORUM, e pela primeira vez na Europa , Marian Sanchez Carniglia, cujo trabalho envolveu até agora grandes nomes do cinema actual.

Biografia:

 Marian Sanchez Carniglia is an Argentinean Producer, Expert in Pitching & Storytelling, Teacher & Film Consultant. Awarded with the Fulbright International Grant in 1998, she formed herself in Los Angeles, between 1999 and 2005, where she learnt from important pitch & film teachers like Linda Seger, Robert McKee, Chris Abbott, Michael Hauge and Ken Rotcop. She worked for Studios like Fox or Sony under the directors Ron Howard, Cameron Crowe, Bryan Singer, The Coen Brothers and James Cameron among others. It was in Cameron´s companies Digital Domain and Ligthstorm where she developed the longest part of her American career. Pitching, Storytelling and Remake Management have become her strongest areas of expertise. She designed and managed the strategy that brought the remake rights of Spanish films like “Nos Miran” by Norberto Lopez Amado, “Trece Campanadas” by Xavier Villaverde and “Fausto 5.0” by Isidro Ortiz to the US, causing interest in studios like Dreamworks and the American directors Janusz Kaminski and Darren Aronofsky. The year 2008 finds her back in her hometown, Buenos Aires as Development VP of Resonant TV, where she had the chance to explore and successfully apply American methods within the Latin American and European Market. During the next five years she handles the Development Department of both Resonant Argentina & Resonant Colombia producing series in Colombia and Spain. In March 2014 she starts teaching International Pitching & Storytelling Seminars in Latin America, being the Fantasporto Forum her first presentation of the workshop in Europe.

“Biografia involuntária dos Amantes” de João Tordo

João Tordo nasceu em Lisboa em 1975. Licenciou-se em Filosofia e estudou Jornalismo e Escrita Criativa em Londres e Nova Iorque. Em 2001, venceu o Prémio Jovens Criadores na categoria de Literatura. Publicou os romances O Livro dos Homens sem Luz (2004); Hotel Memória (2007); As Três Vidas (2008), que recebeu o Prémio Literário José Saramago e cuja edição brasileira foi, em 2011, finalista do Prémio Portugal Telecom; O Bom Inverno (2010), finalista do prémio Melhor Livro de Ficção Narrativa da Sociedade Portuguesa de Autores e do Prémio Literário Fernando Namora e cuja tradução francesa integra as obras seleccionadas para a 6.ª edição do Prémio Literário Europeu; e Anatomia dos Mártires (2011), finalista do Prémio Literário Fernando Namora.
Os seus livros estão publicados em França, Itália, Brasil, Sérvia e Croácia. Trabalha como cronista, tradutor, guionista e formador em workshops de ficção.

“Oito e Demy” – de Danyel Guerra - coletânea de crónicas e críticas sobre os cineastas Manoel de Oliveira, Roberto Rossellini, Luis Buñuel, Federico Fellini, Mario Monicelli, Glauber Rocha, Julio Bressane e Jacques Demy.

Danyel Guerra (aka Danni Guerra) nasceu na cidade do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, num dia de Vênus do mês de novembro do ano em que Luis Buñuel filmou 'El Rio y la Muerte'. Radicado em Portugal há várias décadas, tem uma licenciatura em História pela Faculdade de Letras da Universidade do Porto. Entretanto, optou pela carreira de jornalista, profissão que exerce há 30 anos, nas secções de Cultura e de Espetáculos.

Sua atividade de autor literário se iniciou em 2004, com a publicação, pelo Armazém Literário, do ensaio histórico 'Tomás Gonzaga-Em Busca da Musa Clio'. Seguiu-se, em 2008, a edição, pela mesma chancela, de 'Amor, Città Aperta', uma coletânea de crónicas e cronicontos. Género também exercitado em 'O Céu sobre Berlin' (2009), edição Aleph. De 2012, data a publicação, pela Aleph, de 'Excitações Klimtorianas', uma novela erótico-fantástica. Em 2014, editou para o mesmo selo 'O Apojo das Ninfas', uma recolha de crónicas, contos e entrevistas sobre 13 figuras femininas. (DG)

“Mito Urbano “ de João Coelho-  romance - Lugar da Palavra Editora

João Miguel Quaresma Coelho, um jovem de 20 anos nascido na cidade do Porto, de momento a estudar Engenharia Informática. Desde cedo revelou interesse pela leitura e mais tarde pela escrita. Acumulou várias actividades, do desporto à música, mas a escrita foi a que mais se destacou, estreando-se no mundo das letras com o livro “Olimpo”, lançado no Verão de 2012. Desde então, participou também na colectânea “Lugares e Palavras de Natal” 2012 com um conto e em 2014 lançou o livro "Mito Urbano - Estranho Mundo Novo".

O Fantasporto tem o maior prazer em acolher uma exposição da  artista plástica Manuela Mendes da Silva.  Para além do seu inequívoco mérito, a exposição vem na senda de outros grandes artistas que têm exposto  durante o Fantasporto. Há que salientar ainda o seu percurso, como uma das nossas mais internacionais artistas. Agradecemos à Manuela Mendes da Silva e a todos os que participaram na montagem da exposição, assim como à Galeria Ap’Arte (Porto) que a representa. 

MANUELA MENDES DA SILVA

Maria Manuela Mendes da Silva Bastos Barrancos Fernandes nasceu no Porto e aí se licenciou em Pintura na Escola Superior de Belas Artes, actual F.B.A.U.P. Foi professora de Artes desde 1971 até 2006,em vários níveis de ensino. Iniciou a sua carreira de pintura em 1966,à qual se dedica exclusivamente. É membro da Sociedade Nacional de Belas-Artes. A artista encontra-se representada no “European Art Museum “ ( Museu Virtual). O filme “ No meu atelier do Porto”, realizado por Álvaro Queiroz sobre a obra da artista, consta dos arquivos da Cinemateca Portuguesa “Arquivo Nacional das Imagens em Movimento” A.N.I.M.. Tem diversas referências bibliográficas a nível nacional e internacional. Está presente na Wikipédia. É autora das ilustrações das capas dos livros “ À Sombra da Magnólia” de Delfina Antunes  2011 e “ Longo é o Tempo” de Virgínia Monteiro 2010. Fez a ilustração dum conto no livro “O Homem que trazia Instruções” de Beatriz Pacheco Pereira 2012.Tem ilustração num texto de Levi Guerra no livro de Helder Pacheco, “A Torre da Cidade” 250 anos da Torre dos Clérigos Porto, 2013. Presente no livro” Entre 100 Sentidos” de Nassalete Miranda 2013.No livro “13  Sonetos Ilustrados e 7 Incursões Estéticas” de José Effe, ilustra um soneto. Tem diversas referências bibliográficas a nível nacional e internacional. Está representada em várias colecções no país e no estrangeiro tais como em Paris, Bruxelas, Joanesburgo, Dubai, Boston, Tóquio, Sao Paulo e Chicago.

Maria Manuela Mendes da Silva Bastos Barrancos Fernandes  was born in Oporto and graduated  in Art by the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Oporto. She taught Art between 1971 and 2006. She started her professional  career as a painter in  1966.  A Member of the Sociedade Nacional de Belas-Artes, she is represented in the  “European Art Museum “ ( virtual museum ).  The film “ In my atelier in Oporto”, directed by Álvaro Queiroz , is about her body of work and  is part of the archives of  the Portuguese Cinemateque- “Arquivo Nacional das Imagens em Movimento” A.N.I.M.. She has multiple references in national and international art books. She is also present in collections in Portugal and abroad, mostly in cities such as Paris, Brussels, Johannesburg, Dubai, Boston, Boston, Tokyo, San Paulo and Chicago.

Why did you choose Fantasporto to screen your film?

NO, NOT REALLY.

I HAVE KNOWN ABOUT IT FOR MANY YEARS BECAUSE I TEND TO SPEACIALISE IN ‘GENRE’ MOVIES
